There was a miserable 11-day span recently for Seahawks first-round pick Byron Murphy II. Three Seattle losses occurred during that period, and all he could do was watch from the sideline due to a hamstring injury suffered again the Miami Dolphins on Sept. 22. He could do nothing but watch as the Seahawks defense gave up 42, 29 and 36 points.
The 6-foot, 306-pound defensive tackle said it’s the first time he’s missed a game.
I’ve never been hurt — never had any type of injury,” Murphy said on Thursday. “For me to have an injury at this level for the first time in my career — it was a lot. “
Murphy left little doubt that he’ll be ready to go Sunday at Atlanta when the Seahawks attempt to end their losing streak at three games when they take on the 4-2 Falcons.
“No hesitation,” said Murphy, who was picked 16th overall by the Seahawks in April. “I’m confident. I’m feeling great, 100%. I’m great, 100% good.”
Murphy said he’s a “force in the running game,” and hopes to help out a lot.
He also talked about another motivation. The Falcons were thought to be interested in drafting Murphy, but they instead chose quarterback Michael Penix Jr. out of Washington. Murphy fell to 16th overall, where he became the second defensive player selected — one pick behind Laiatu Latu of the Colts.
“I did hear that Atlanta was supposed to draft me,” he said. “I heard rumors about that.”
“But they passed up on me… so that’s a big loss for them. They will feel me Sunday.”
