Jason Peters thought he was done with playing for good, but the Seahawks contacted him recently about helping an injury-riddle offensive line. He signed with Seattle to join the practice squad today.
“I get call, I got to go ball,” said Peters, a 42-year-old in the NFL for a 21st season. “I’m not going to say this is the last rodeo, but I’m right there at the end.”
When the first week of the season kicked off, Peters figured that was it. He never officially retired however in case an opportunity that suited him came along. Peters said he’s been doing cardio to keep in shape, and believes he can be ready to play ” in a couple of weeks.” At 42, he is 5 years older than Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald. He played in eight games, including two starts, for Seattle last season.
“If is wasn’t this team, I probably would have been done,” said Peters, a two-time All-Pro in 2011 and 2013 while with Philadelphia. “…My last year here, I had a great time with (former Seahawks coach Pete Carroll) and connected with a bunch of guys here.”
Peters will likely have multiple roles with Seattle. He believes he’s capable of helping anywhere on the line, and will also work with the young offensive linemen.
The Peters signing could be yet another sign that right tackle Abe Lucas, the starter at right tackle when healthy, may not be back any time soon. Placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list with a lingering knee issue prior to the season, Lucas was eligible to return this week. The Seahawks, always tight-lipped about injuries, have not indicated when he might return.
George Fant started in place of Lucas, but also suffered an injury. He’s currently on the Injured Reserve list, and is eligible to return after the Oct. 10 Thurday Night Football game against San Francisco. Stone Forsythe has started at right tackle the past three games.
