The Seahawks had hoped for the return of star receiver DK Metcalf for Sunday’s game against the Rams, but he will remain out with a knee injury suffered during the Oct. 20 win at Atlanta.
With the team’s bye week following the Rams game, Metcalf will have an additional week to recover. Macdonald hopes Metcalf will be ready for the Nov. 17 game at San Francisco, but said his receiver remains “week to week.”
“He just needs more time,” Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said Friday. “There’s nothing he could have done differently, we just need more time for him. So that’s what’s best for him and the team.
Tight end Noah Fant will also miss Sunday’s game after suffering a groin injury in Wednesday’s practice. Macdonald said Friday that he may be out for some time, but would likely not be put on IR — which would require him to miss at least four games.
“Guys that are stepping in will be ready to roll,” Macdonald said. “… We’re going to miss Noah, and we hope he gets better soon. But, excited for the other (tight ends) as well.
The revolving door at right tackle may open with George Fant walking through it to start against the Rams on Sunday, but Macdonald did not confirm whether would be Fant or another start for Michael Jerrell.
Abe Lucas, the starter at right tackle in 2022 and when healthy in 2023, will remain out this week as he continues to get game ready after January knee surgery. Lucas was designated to return to practice off of the physically unable to perform list on Oct. 23, and Macdonald previously indicated that he likely would not play in a game until after next week’s bye. The schedule to return, he indicated, is not set in stone.
“The schedule is ‘let’s keep progressing’ and then we’ll make a decision after the bye as to where we’re at,” Macdonald said. “He’s gaining confidence, he’s working hard, getting comfortable being uncomfortable. And that’s where we’re at right now.”
George Fant, who started the season opener, may be an option on Sunday. Macdonald said the team would make a decision on Saturday about whether to add him to the active roster. He was designated to return to practice of of injured reserve, also on Oct. 23.
“George looks good — George looks really good,” Macdonald said, smiling.
Asked again, and he said smiled even bigger and said, “If we’re going to make a transaction, it’ll happen (Saturday).”
If Fant is unable to return, the Seahawks would again turn to Michael Jerrell, the rookie sixth-round draft pick who struggled at times in Sunday’s 31-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills.
Nose tackle Cameron Young remains out with a knee injury. Recently-acquired linebacker Ernest Jones IV was listed as questionable on Friday, but it expected to play Sunday.
