It’s too early to tell whether or not four Seahawks pass rushers — Byron Murphy II, Boye Mafe, Uchenna Nwosu and Leonard Williams — will play against the New York Giants on Sunday (1:25 p.m., FOX TV, KIRO radio) after missing Monday’s 42-29 loss to Detroit.
The other question mark is safety Julian Love, who left the Monday Night Football game with a quad contusion.
“I think he’s doing OK,” Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said. “I haven’t talked to him in the last X amount of hours or so, but things are all right.”
It’s hard to know what that means.
It will be important to learn how to translate Mike Macdonald’s injury commentary — which is minimal. With former Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, it was sometimes possible to glean meaning behind the words. For example, “He has a chance to go,” usually meant the player wouldn’t end up playing. “We have to take care of him,” was usually a serious injury.
Macdonald, like most coaches, does not like to get into injury discussions and generally doesn’t offer more information than is required by the NFL. Perhaps we’ll learn later in the week what “OK” means.
As for the pass rushers, Macdonald indicated that Nwosu and Mafe, both fighting knee issues, would participate in Wednesday’s practice, as would Williams (ribs). Murphy (hamstring), Macdonald said, would not.
“With all those guys it’s a process of ‘Can we get him to the line?'” Macdonald said. “Are they feeling comfortable? Is it best for them to go? I know all of them are chomping at the bit to get out there, but we’re going to do what’s best for them and what’s best for us.”
It would some make sense for the Seahawks to hold players out when it doubt against the Giants, with an NFC West matchup against San Francisco looming four days later on Thursday Night Football.
Love, however, may have extra incentive to be ready for Sunday against the Giants, who let him walk in free agency after the 2022 season. Love signed a 2-year, $12 million contract with Seattle in March of 2023 and signed a, 3-year, $36 million extension this offseason.
